CCM - Comitato di Collaborazione Medica is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1968 in Turin, Italy by a group of doctors and specialized in the health sector. Its core mission is contributing to the development processes which safeguard and promote the right to health, by acting with an integrated approach on the health needs and by influencing the social-economical determinants. CCM aims at the improvement of health conditions of the population in low-income countries and intervenes through projects of international cooperation, education to the world citizenship, advocacy activities and interventions of health promotion in the context of migration processes.
CCM cooperates with the local communities and authorities in order to strengthen and develop the health systems, to improve the accessibility and the quality of prevention and health care services. CCM works also to promote health in the communities cooperating with local organizations and promotes an integrated approach to the health by working directly or by cooperating with other local and international organizations in the fields of water, education, veterinary, food safety which help the complete well-being of the individual. Where present, CCM gives an immediate answer to the essential needs also in emergency situations.
In Garowe (Puntland/Somalia) CCM (in partnership and funded by UNOPS) is supporting Garowe General Hospital since 2010, by contributing to the payment of its recurrent costs, procuring drugs and supplies and providing continuous technical support to the hospital management. In 2014 (in Partnership and funded by UNFPA and PLMOH) CCM is implementing the project: Expanding and enhancing the quality and integration of CEmONC services in Garowe (Nugaal Region – Puntland). The proposed action intends contributing to the expansion, integration and enhancement of CEmONC services in Garowe, serving Nugaal Region population.

GENARAL INFORMATION ON THE VACANCY

Duty station: Garowe Type: Expat Position Contract duration: 3 month (probation period), renewable up to 1 year subject to funding Dead line for applications: 4th September 2014 Starting date: October 2014

Objectives and general characteristics

  • Preparing the operating room, making sure it is always stocked with the proper surgical tools and equipment and a minimum quantity of supplies to handle any emergency case;
  • Assisting the surgeon during any elective and emergency procedure;
  • In collaboration with the surgical team, informing the patient about the procedure s/he will undertake describing side effects and recovery process expected after the procedure;
  • Monitoring the patient recovery in the post-operative phase, availing proper medication and changing the dressings. Reports to: Medical Coordinator in Garowe (MC)

Areas of responsibility • Coordinate and organise all activities and flow of communication in the operating theatre and post operation room; • Ensure the sterilization of materials, instruments and linen and the preparation of surgical packs strictly follow the universal standards; • In close collaboration with the Department Head, supervise and control all movements in and out of the operating theatre, before during and after any surgical procedure; • Ensure the respect of all instructions, prescriptions and protocols by any surgical department staff; • Take care of all surgical instruments and equipment and ensure they are always well maintained and in good working condition; • Make sure standard hygienic conditions and universal precautions are fully respected in the theatre at any point in time; • Support and supervise the cleaning of the theatre, ensuring the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment by any staff involved in it; • Supervise the timely orders of drugs, medications, and consumables, to avoid stock outs and ensure minimum supplies are available to handle any sudden emergency case; • Participate in all surgical operations, assisting the surgeon, and carry out minor surgical procedures when requested; • Supervise the recording of any patients data, ensuring key information are properly captured in the OT and Surgical Department registers; • Assess training needs of the of the OT/Surgical Department staff and propose a training plan to the MC; • Continuous supportive supervision of the OT/Surgical department and daily on the job coaching of the staff; • Discuss with the MC issues of concern as they arise, to ensure the identification and application of feasible corrective measures; • Write monthly reports on project activities as per CCM template; • Ensure data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting according to MoH tools and schedule, and in line with CCM procedures

Requirements: • Relevant BSC and/or academic qualification in nursing/midwifery or similar; • At least 5 years of relevant work experience as a Scrub/Theatre nurse; • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in remote and disadvantaged settings; • Fluent in both oral and written English; • Basic IT skills, • Flexibility and willingness to work in remote areas; • Comfortable working in a multicultural team; • Teamwork inclination.

Additional preferable qualifications: • Short trainings on surgery and surgical techniques and EmONC; • Previous work experience with an INGO; • Previous experience as a trainer; • Knowledge of Somali language.
