CCM - Comitato di Collaborazione Medica is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1968 in Turin, Italy by a group of doctors and specialized in the health sector. Its core mission is contributing to the development processes which safeguard and promote the right to health, by acting with an integrated approach on the health needs and by influencing the social-economical determinants. CCM aims at the improvement of health conditions of the population in low-income countries and intervenes through projects of international cooperation, education to the world citizenship, advocacy activities and interventions of health promotion in the context of migration processes.
CCM cooperates with the local communities and authorities in order to strengthen and develop the health systems, to improve the accessibility and the quality of prevention and health care services. CCM works also to promote health in the communities cooperating with local organizations and promotes an integrated approach to the health by working directly or by cooperating with other local and international organizations in the fields of water, education, veterinary, food safety which help the complete well-being of the individual. Where present, CCM gives an immediate answer to the essential needs also in emergency situations.
In Garowe (Puntland/Somalia) CCM (in partnership and funded by UNOPS) is supporting Garowe General Hospital since 2010, by contributing to the payment of its recurrent costs, procuring drugs and supplies and providing continuous technical support to the hospital management. In 2014 (in Partnership and funded by UNFPA and PLMOH) CCM is implementing the project: Expanding and enhancing the quality and integration of CEmONC services in Garowe (Nugaal Region – Puntland). The proposed action intends contributing to the expansion, integration and enhancement of CEmONC services in Garowe, serving Nugaal Region population.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE VACANCY

Duty station: Garowe Type: Expatriate Position Contract duration: 3 month (probation period), renewable up to 1 year subject to funding Starting date: October 2014

Objectives and general characteristics

  • Contributing to the expansion, integration and enhancement of CEmONC services in Garowe General Hospital, serving Nugaal Region population;
  • Setting up of an effective coordination and functional referral mechanism between primary and secondary care facilities, ensuring complicated cases are promptly referred at hospital level for proper care and management;
  • Contributing to increase awareness and demand for Maternal Care and CEmONC services among Garowe community through the organization of ad hoc health education sessions at hospital and community level.
  • Collaborating with CCM project team for the timely and effective implementation of project activities.

Reports to: Medical Coordinator in Garowe (MC)

Areas of responsibility • Ensure the timely and continuously provision of the 9 CEmONC signal functions at Garowe General Hospital; • Ensure the timely identification of high-risk pregnancies and their proper follow-up and management till after-birth; • Promptly intervene and support the management of complicated deliveries in close collaboration with the Maternity team; • Carry out elective and emergency surgical operations including fistula repair and FGM repair; • In close collaboration with the Maternity Head, ensure a daily supervision of all services and activities provided within the department; In close collaboration with Maternity Doctors, carry out daily consultations and inpatient ward rounds; • In close collaboration with the Maternity Head, organize weekly meetings with staff members to prompt identify and address gaps in the delivery of care and discuss critical cases requiring adequate management and care; • Ensure services provided to maternity patients respect the minimum quality standards and closely supervise the application of protocols by all department staff; • Ensure and supervise the provision of a proper counseling and support following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death; • Ensure data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting according to MoH tools and schedule, and in line with CCM procedures; • Discuss with the MC issues of concern as they arise, to ensure the timely identification and application of feasible corrective measures; • Write monthly reports on project activities as per CCM template; • Assess training needs of the staff of Maternity Department and the 4 MCH supported by the project and propose a training plan to the MC; • Ensure a continuous training of Maternity staff, through close supervision, technical assistance and on-job coaching.

Requirements: • Medical Doctor specialised in Obstetrics/Gynaecology; • Proven excellent obstetrics and gynecological surgical skills, including C/S, ectopic pregnancy and hysterectomy; • Proven experience in Obstetric Fistula and FGM repair surgery; • Female candidate; • At least 5 years of relevant work experience; • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in remote and disadvantaged settings; • Fluent in both oral and written English; • Basic IT skills, • Flexibility and willingness to work in remote areas; • Comfortable working in a multicultural team; • Teamwork inclination.

Additional preferable qualifications: • Trainings on EmONC, Fistula and FGM repair, Family Planning and other Reproductive Health topics; • Previous work experience with an INGO; • Previous experience as a trainer; • Knowledge of Somali language.
