The position falls within the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia Attorney General’s Office (AGO) and its mission to establish a functioning and impartial prosecution service in Somalia.
Given the enormous challenges that women and children face in accessing justice in Somalia and in protecting their interests in the formal justice sector, the AGO seeks a Women and Children’s Rights Adviser to provide technical support to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) for cases concerning these highly vulnerable groups.
The Women and Children’s Rights Adviser will be recruited into, and embedded within the Attorney General’s Office in Mogadishu for a duration of 12 months. She/he will work under the primary supervision of the Attorney General, and the secondary supervision of the IDLO Country Director.
The Women and Children’s Rights Advisor will be responsible for the following deliverables:
• Provide technical support for cases within the AGO that concern highly vulnerable groups, including women and children;
• Work closely with Somali prosecutors and the sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) unit of the Attorney General’s Office to ensure protection and justice to victims of SGBV, including interviewing vulnerable and traumatized witnesses, among other activities;
• Work with IDLO’s lead Gender Specialist to develop training for prosecutors on their role in investigation of SGBV crimes; the relationship between police and prosecutors; the decision to prosecute and selection of charges and all other aspects related to the investigation and trial of SGBV crimes;
• Travel to regions of Somalia to conduct research and deliver trainings for newly appointed prosecutors on their role in investigation of SGBV crimes;
• Provide ongoing mentoring and technical support to women and child protection staff of the Attorney General’s Office to ensure their professional development;
• Provide technical support on collecting and using data to identify trends and patterns in SGBV cases and reporting;
• Make accurate documentation of all activities undertaken in day-to-day work as well as in research assignments within Somalia and report effective achievements and drawbacks to supervisor;
• Perform other work-related duties as required.
