Action for Relief and Development (ARD) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) operating in South/Central Somalia.
ARD seeks to address the causes and consequences of human suffering and poverty amongst some of the most vulnerable communities in South/Central and Somalia at large through participatory relief and development invention in partnership with Governmental and Non-Governmental Organization. ARD is recruiting a qualified Somali citizen for the position of Public Health Coordinator, Hygiene and Sanitation to be based in Mogadishu on a nine (9) months contract with a possibility of extension. The successful candidate should be willing to travel remote areas.
Job Summary
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
Develop and ensure the use of appropriate techniques and materials for hygiene awareness trainings are roll out and ensure that they are implemented to promote community health living;
Work with the respective teachers of every targeted school in carrying out hygiene activities in the schools and the community
Cultivate linkage with the relevant institutions and programs like the ministry of Health, District Health Service, District Education Office, WASH and Health working groups at District level , in accordance to the ARD policies
Participate in the development of strategies for long term or additional interventions, including development of new proposals and the ARD annual strategy.
Ensure that all Sanitation and Hygiene initiatives within the Programme area of influence meet or exceed planned outcomes and are implemented in full compliance with DoH, WHO, SPHERE and other relevant partnership and international standards/guidelines;
Support implementation of sanitation and Hygiene projects to ensure quality, effectiveness and timely implementation;
Develop, monitor and evaluate Sanitation and hygiene project indicators and standards for use by all Programmes especially the WASH Programme;
Track the progress of activities on Sanitation & Hygiene, ensure the collecting of program indicators and provide on-time internal status reports and external donor reports.
Collaborate with the DoH and other relevant departments in providing technical support and assistance to Sanitation and Hygiene interventions;
Provide technical support, training and Capacity building of staff and communities in programming and implementation of Sanitation and Hygiene interventions.
Support and promote advocacy on Sanitation and Hygiene issues.
Impart appropriate mentoring, coaching and supervision in order to equip, motivate and empower a new generation of Hygiene Promoters within ARD;
Ensure that all data and information is updated, well organized and easily accessible; and that lessons learnt best practices on sanitation and Hygiene interventions are capitalized.
Support the establishment and consolidate a working culture - based upon results based management principals - that consistently achieves and/or surpasses established targets and standards;
Represent ‘ARD’ externally and collaborate/coordinate with local authorities, partners and stakeholders.
Identify and monitor risks, constraints or escalating issues, and inform the Coordinator accordingly.
Develop appropriate targeting criteria and mechanisms to ensure the needs of identified vulnerable groups are met.
Any other task assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health/Environmental Health or related field from a recognized University/ Institution.
Minimum 3 years of experience in technical field related to Environmental sanitation & hygiene.
Proven experience in technical surveying, project designing, implementation
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, project planning, communication and time management skills
Experience in community based participatory development approaches strongly desired
Computer literacy in MS Word, MS Excel and Technical Drawing Packages
Experience in community mobilization (or community based approach) and hygiene promotion programmes are mandatory.
The post holder will be analytical, quick thinking and flexible. Creativity and the ability to develop innovative approaches in the WASH sector.
Experience in carrying out assessments and surveys for programme and needs definition
Ability to work in a dynamic team with diverse professional skills.
Information Communication Technology literate
An understanding of security issues
Have good report writing skills.
Fluency in written and spoken English
