GENERAL FUNCTIONS
Our client is in the process of implementing Bossasoo Airport Project. The project mainly entails upgrading the current runway from gravel to paved standards. Pavement designs were carried out based on data which had been collected and analyzed by previous consultants who were involved in the various formative years of the airport project. Our client now needs to carry out a few geotechnical confirmatory tests to verify the data used in generating the runway pavement structure before construction can begin and as such seeks the service of a Geotechnical Engineer to carry out this exercise. Under the overall guidance of the PIU Manager and the direct supervision of the PIU Construction Supervisor for the Bossaso Airport, the Geotechnical Engineer will give his technical expertise to carry out tasks as laid down in the below.
Specifically the incumbent will be responsible for the following substantive tasks:
Pavement Material Test
Collect material sample from the existing runway pavement at 400m intervals (starting from Chainage 0+000 at Threshold 27).
The sample collection will be collected in the following manner:
· Collected within 30m runway width staggered as centre, then right, then left and so on.
· 2 sets of samples will be collected from each test hole.
o 0 to 200mmm depth 1No Sample
o 200mm to 400mm depth 1No Sample
(total of 2No Sample per test hole)
· The sample collected shall be adequate for the following test
o In-situ moisture content
o Particle size distribution BS812: Part 103
o Proctor tests to determine Maximum Dry Density (MDD) – BS1377 (1990) Part 4 (4.5kg hammer)
o Atterberg limits – BS1377 (1990) Part 2
o CBR test at optimum moisture content and after 4 days soaking BS1377 (1990) Part 9
Note that the GPS coordinate and photograps should be recorded for each test hole.
Pavement Structural Properties and Characteristics
· Carry out Sand Replacement compaction test using Large Pouring Cylinder Methods of BS1377 at 400m interval starting from chainage 0+000 (at Threshold 27), near the test holes describe above. The results will be compared with Maxim Dry Density (MDD) results as established in the tests above.
· 0.5m x 0.5m excavation beyond the runway embankment thickness at 800m intervals to collect and test the CBR of the underneath subgrade material (note that these are additional CBR to those above)
The Geotechnical Engineer will record the laboratory tests results and submit his analysis report to the Construction Supervisor.
Any other duty related to regarding the geotechnical investigation as may be assigned by the Construction Supervisor.
The Geotechnical Engineer will keep the project team updated on his daily activities.
