POSITION SUMMARY
The position holder will work closely with Adeso’s Somalia Deputy Country Director, Somalia program team as well as The Communication and Advocacy team in Nairobi to offer support in line with the organization’s communications needs across Somalia. The main purpose of role of the Communications Officer is to document and capture the work of the various programs in Somalia.
The main duties and responsibilities of the communications Officer are listed below.
POSITION PURPOSE
- Support increase Adeso’s visibility, voice, and influence across the various programs in Somalia;
- Support document and communicate results from Adeso’s projects in Somalia;
- Produce communication products that will include documentation of Adeso’s work in Somalia i.e. Photos and Videos from the various programs.
SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Documentation of Communication Materials
· Collect and formulate success stories, case studies and videos as per program guidelines and activities.
· Promote the visibility of the Adeso programs in Somalia with relevant stakeholders assigned to the programs.
· Support in the provision of communication and visibility support to new and ongoing projects.
· Offer support to the Somali Deputy County Director on all Communication related activities for Somalia programs
· Lead in the design and the development of programs signage, banners and other visibilities materials
· Work with the program managers and the program on regular and continuous quality activity based photos, video documentaries and the success stories
Social media and Website
· Establish and manage Dropbox folders to share imagery and video content. This will entail managing Adeso Somalia Photo-library by carefully labelling all images and ensuring library is well stocked with images
· Upload success stories and related communication content to the Adeso website.
· In liaison with the communications and advocacy team, publish all the approved program documentations, success stories and videos in the Adeso websites
· Manage the websites-the social websites-twitter, facebook
· Produce and prepare any related media communication content emanating from Somalia.
Staff capacity building and other roles
· Continuously provide on the job training to Adeso Somalia program team on communications trainings to Adeso Somalia field staff. That includes and not limited to quality photo collection, video documentaries and the success stories
· Participate regular program reviews, program planning events and provide an insights to the communications needs of the programs
· Attend events, including conferences and field trips where required.
· Any other duty as may be assigned
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Degree in Communications/Journalism or related field;
· Two to three years’ work experience in communications in similar context;
· Experience working within a humanitarian or development context and working on international donor funded projects;
· Excellent written and spoken English is essential, as well as a critical eye for editing and grammar;
· Photography, graphic design and short video production skills preferred;
· Demonstrated effective organizational skills and ability to handle work in a timely manner;
· Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with respect for diversity;
· Willingness and ability to travel frequently to remote locations in Somalia and Kenya;
· Somali speaker required.
