The Pharmacy Assistant will provide a variety of services related to the daily operation of a pharmacy under the direct supervision and guidance of the pharmacist. The main responsibilities are as follows:
- Ensure effective functioning of the drug supply system.
- Packages and labels units of medications and medical supplies for distribution to authorized locations.
- Coordinates the distribution , delivery and pick up of pharmaceutical products.
- Sorts and stocks incoming pharmaceutical products.
- Keeping accurate records of purchase, requisition and consumption of drugs and medical supplies.
- Cleans work area and sterilizes prescription bottles and other containers.
- Fills stock orders for medications and medical supplies.
- Prepare and submit regular inventory reports and requisition orders in time to avoid unnecessary delays.
- To aseptically prepare, under the supervision of a pharmacist, intravenous injections and other aseptically dispensed items in unit dose form, with doses tailored to the individual patient, and presented as a quality product, produced to a standard which ensures patient safety and those who administer it.
- To assist in monitoring the environment and equipment within the department to determine that they conform to agreed standards.
- To assist in stock controlling systems for both non-stock and stock consumables used within the Aseptic Unit to ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.
- To assist in reporting medicines/medical supplies/consumables monthly consumptions via the computerized system including returned stocks and disposing of expired or unwanted items in accordance with the departmental procedures, maximizing drug usage and financial resource.
- To assist timely regular orders as per the consumptions and according to the essential drug list.
- To assist the Senior Pharmacy Technician, Stores and distribution in the coordination of the Drug Hazard/Recall procedure in the event of a drug recall, where appropriate.
- To teach the patients the rational ways of medicines administration which have been prescribed by the Medical Doctor.
- Identify the less utilized and short expiry commodities and advise the prescribers accordingly.
- Ensure continuous review of the essential drug list in reference to WHO and IRC recommended drug list as per the dynamics of the program.
- Ensure proper storage of all items as per their specific storage requirements.
- Participate in health promotion sessions for beneficiaries.
- Participate in the controlling sterilization procedures in the health facilities and in the dispensary.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Nursing or equivalent, preferably with technical knowledge in drug supply chain management systems and quality assurance.
- Registered by the relevant and credible body and in possession of current practicing license in Somalia.
- Minimum three (3) years working experience in a hospital/health facility set-up.
Required Competencies
- A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity.
- Knowledge of local Somali language.
- Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization, in particular working in primary health care programs and conducting nursing.
- Strong counselling skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate.
- Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.
